Cézanne's Blue Vase at the Musée d'Orsay

Paul Cézanne painted Le Vase Bleu around 1889 to 1890, and it now belongs to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. A tall blue vase of mixed flowers stands on a table with a few other objects, set against a cool blue-gray wall.

Cézanne built the picture from patches of color rather than outlines, which gives even this simple arrangement real weight.

Cézanne in Provence

Cézanne spent most of his life around Aix-en-Provence, where he painted the same few subjects again and again: Mont Sainte-Victoire, card players, bathers and still lifes on his studio table. Repetition was his method. Each new version was another try at getting the structure right.

Younger artists collected him eagerly. Henri Matisse bought a small Cézanne painting of bathers in 1899 and kept it for decades as a source of strength.

Le Vase Bleu Diamond Painting: Placing the Blues

The blues of the vase and background sit close together, so check the symbols carefully where they meet. Fill the background and table first, then the vase, and finish with the flowers, which hold the brightest and most varied colors. Cézanne's patchy color areas translate naturally into drill blocks.

The flowers are small, so place them with care. A few stray drills there show more than anywhere else on the canvas. Working one flower at a time pays off.

Where Le Vase Bleu Looks Best

Its cool blues sit well against white or gray walls. It suits a dining room, a sideboard or a kitchen. Find more art classics among our diamond painting kits.
