Cézanne painted Pyramid of Skulls in 1901, a few years before his death, and it's a frank, thoughtful look at mortality. A pile of skulls, and nothing to soften it. That plainness is what makes it so striking.

This Cézanne diamond painting suits a study or a moody bookshelf, and it's a great conversation piece for anyone with a taste for the gothic.

Why Did Cézanne Paint Skulls?

Around 1901, in his sixties, Paul Cézanne returned again and again to skulls. Pyramid of Skulls stacks four of them against a dark background. It follows the old vanitas tradition of still lifes about death, but Cézanne treats each skull as a solid, rounded form, much as he treated his apples.

The skulls came late in his life. Cézanne was in his sixties, often unwell, and working in Aix-en-Provence, the town where he was born. In 1902 he built a new studio on the hill of Les Lauves just outside Aix, and these quiet reminders of death sat alongside his many views of Mont Sainte-Victoire.

The Painter Who Built With Shapes

Cézanne, who also painted many landscapes of Provence, famously advised treating nature through the cylinder, the sphere and the cone. You can feel that here. In diamond painting the skulls become curved patches of pale tones. Fill the dark background first, then build each skull from shadow to highlight.

Younger painters took that lesson to heart. Picasso and Braque built Cubism partly on Cézanne's way of seeing, which is why he is so often called the father of modern art.

Pyramid of Skulls Diamond Painting or Paint by Numbers

In diamonds, the pale skulls pick up a soft glow against the dark ground, which suits the subject. Sort the cream and gray shades before you start, since many of them sit very close together.
