Gardens and Sunlight in the Work of Henri Edmond Cross

For his last two decades, Henri Edmond Cross lived on the Mediterranean coast of France and painted the gardens, terraces and pines around his home in brilliant sunlight. As a Neo-Impressionist, he placed separate strokes of pure color side by side and let the viewer's eye mix them. The Flowered Terrace is full of that bright, broken color.

What Is Neo-Impressionism?

The name was coined by the critic Félix Fénéon in 1886 for the painters around Georges Seurat. They wanted to put the loose color of Impressionism on a scientific footing, using color theory to decide which strokes to set next to each other. Cross joined them and, with his friend Paul Signac, carried the style into the twentieth century.

What to Look For in The Flowered Terrace

Look at how the flowers are not drawn petal by petal. Each bloom is a small cluster of strokes in warm pinks, reds and oranges, while the leaves and shadows are made from blues and greens. The terrace and sky give the eye somewhere to rest between the busy flower beds.
