Cross was a French Neo-Impressionist and a close friend of Paul Signac. In 1891 he left Paris for the Var coast, and the Mediterranean light shaped the rest of his work. He built his scenes from separate touches of pure color that blend in the viewer's eye, an approach known as Divisionism.
He made his home at Saint-Clair, near Le Lavandou, until his death in 1910, while Signac settled along the coast at Saint-Tropez. The two friends visited often and compared work.
A painting made of small touches of color is a natural match for drills. Each patch of pink, lilac, blue or gold becomes its own section, so the finished piece shimmers much like the original. It is a challenging design, with many close shades in the sea and sky.
Work in good light, and sort the pale colors before you begin.
Early light is cooler than afternoon sun, and Cross records it with pinks, lilacs and soft blues instead of strong yellows. Notice how the sea and sky share many of the same tints, so the horizon seems to melt into the haze. The town sits low across the water, a quiet band of warmer color.
