Henri-Edmond Cross on the Mediterranean

Henri-Edmond Cross was born Henri-Edmond Delacroix in Douai in 1856 and changed his name early in his career. Around 1891 he settled on the Mediterranean coast near Le Lavandou, where the strong southern light pushed his color brighter. Antibes Afternoon comes from that world of sea, pines and sunshine.

Antibes sits on the Côte d'Azur between Cannes and Nice, an old walled port facing the sea. Cross spent the rest of his life on this coast and died at Saint-Clair, near Le Lavandou, in 1910.

From Tiny Dots to Mosaic Strokes

Cross began with the fine dots of Seurat, but by the late 1890s his touches had grown into larger, square strokes laid side by side like tiles. The color got bolder too, with oranges, pinks and violets that real shadows never show.

That later, blockier style is part of why his work made such an impression on Matisse and the young Fauves.

Why Pointillism Works as a Diamond Painting

Neo-Impressionist painters built pictures from small separate touches of pure color that the eye blends at a distance. A diamond painting works the same way, one small facet at a time. Up close you see individual drills, and from across the room the shimmer reads as warm afternoon light.
