Henri Edmond Cross and the Light of Provence

Henri Edmond Cross (1856 to 1910) was born Henri Edmond Delacroix and changed his name to avoid comparison with the famous painter Eugène Delacroix. In 1891 he moved to the Mediterranean coast of southern France, where he spent the rest of his life painting gardens, pines and the sea.

He settled at Saint-Clair, near Le Lavandou, not far from Paul Signac in Saint-Tropez. In the summer of 1904, Henri Matisse worked alongside them on the Riviera, an experience that fed directly into the bright color of Fauvism.

What to Look For in A Glade in Provence

A glade is an open patch of light inside a wood, and Cross loved that contrast: cool shade under the trees and warm sun breaking through. In his later work the dots grew into broad, square strokes, and his colors grew bolder, with violets and blues for shadow and oranges and golds for light.

Cross also worked often in watercolor, and those quicker studies show how freely he handled color before building it into his carefully structured canvases.

Why Neo-Impressionism Suits Diamond Painting

Cross built his pictures from separate touches of pure color that the eye blends from a distance. Diamond painting works the same way. Each drill is a small dot of color, and up close the glade looks like a mosaic, while from across the room it settles into sunlight and shade.

A Glade in Provence for a Quiet Room

The palette is warm but gentle, with greens, violets and golds rather than sharp contrasts. It suits a reading corner, a bedroom or a sunny hallway, anywhere the light shifts through the day. Work in rows or small blocks and step back often to watch it come together. For his seaside work, see Antibes Morning.
