The Story of Van Gogh's Almond Blossom

In February 1890 Van Gogh painted Almond Blossom at Saint-Rémy, after hearing that his nephew had been born. Almond trees are among the first to flower in Provence, often while winter is still hanging on, which made them a natural symbol of new life. The original belongs to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The flat blue sky and crisp branches show how much he had learned from Japanese woodblock prints.

A Gift for Theo's Son

The baby was named Vincent Willem, after his uncle. The painting was meant to hang in Theo and Jo's home, and it stayed in the family. Years later that same nephew played a central part in founding the Van Gogh Museum, so the picture made for his birth now hangs in the museum he helped create.

Van Gogh fell ill again soon after finishing it, and it remained one of the most personal pictures of his final year.

What to Look for in Almond Blossom

There is no ground, no trunk and no horizon. You look up into the branches from below, as if lying under the tree. The dark, twisting boughs cut across the sky in strong outlines, while the white and pale pink flowers sit on top in small, careful groups.

In Paris, Van Gogh had collected hundreds of Japanese prints, and he admired their clear shapes and flat areas of color. This painting is one of the purest examples of that influence.

Building the Almond Blossom Diamond Painting

The large turquoise sky is the easy part and it goes down fast. The branches and white flowers need a little more attention, since the petals have small touches of pink and green. Do the sky in sections, then the branches, and save the blossoms for last.

It makes a meaningful gift for new parents or a nursery wall. Browse more of our diamond painting kits.
