Renoir's Flowers and Why He Painted Them

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, born in Limoges in 1841, started work as a teenager painting flowers on porcelain. Years later, as a leading Impressionist, he still returned to bouquets, saying they let him experiment with color and tone freely, without the pressure of a portrait. His chrysanthemums show that loose, feathery touch.

Renoir, Impressionism and His Later Years

In the 1870s Renoir painted alongside Monet and showed at the Impressionist exhibitions in Paris, filling his canvases with dancing crowds, boating parties and sunlit faces. Later he grew interested in firmer drawing, then softened again into warm, rounded forms.

In old age, crippled by arthritis, he settled at Cagnes-sur-Mer in the south of France and kept painting, flowers included, almost to the end of his life. He died there in 1919.

What to Look For in the Bouquet

Renoir rarely outlined a petal, and chrysanthemums, with their many thin, curling petals, gave him plenty to play with. The chrysanthemums are built from small strokes of warm color that overlap, so the bouquet seems to glow from inside, while the background is brushed in loosely around it.

Renoir Diamond Painting: Placing the Petals

Impressionist flowers are made of soft dabs rather than outlines, and diamond painting picks that up nicely. The petals break into scattered clusters of close colors, while the background is wider and calmer. Fill the background first, then work the bouquet from the outside in, so the brightest blooms at the center go down last.

It looks lovely in a kitchen or dining room. Find more florals among our diamond painting kits.
