Gustav Klimt painted The Kiss in 1907, at the height of Art Nouveau, and it remains one of his most famous works. Gold covers the lovers like a shared cloak, full of fine lines and intricate patterns.

Zoom in on that gold. In a Klimt diamond painting it catches the light the way his real gold leaf does. A romantic gift for a partner or an anniversary.

Klimt's The Kiss and the Golden Period

Gustav Klimt painted The Kiss in 1907 and 1908, during what is now called his Golden Period, when he worked real gold leaf into his canvases. The Austrian state bought it before it was even finished, and it still hangs in the Belvedere in Vienna. Klimt's father was a gold engraver, which may explain the fascination.

The couple kneel at the edge of a flowered meadow, wrapped together in one patterned cloak.

Where Did Klimt's Gold Come From?

Klimt grew up around metalwork and trained in the decorative arts in Vienna, painting murals and ceilings with his brother. In 1897 he helped found the Vienna Secession, a group that broke away from the conservative art world, and he served as its first president.

In 1903 he traveled to Ravenna in Italy and saw its Byzantine mosaics, glittering with gold. You can feel that visit in the flat, shining surfaces of The Kiss.

What to Look For in The Kiss

The canvas is square, and the lovers fill the center like a single golden shape. Only their faces, hands and feet are painted in a natural way. Everything else is pattern. She kneels with her eyes closed, he bends over her, and the flowers in her hair repeat the flowers at their feet.

Notice where the meadow ends. Her toes curl over the edge, as if the couple sit on the brink of something. Her face turns toward us while his is almost hidden, and that small choice keeps the picture tender rather than dramatic.

The Kiss Diamond Painting: Gold, Pattern and Meadow

Look at the cloak closely. His side is covered in black and white rectangles, hers in round flowery circles. In diamonds, those golds catch the light just as gold leaf does. The meadow is the most colorful part, and the background is a broad, quick area of bronze.

Work the background first, then the cloak pattern by pattern, and place the faces last with fresh eyes. Frame it for a bedroom or give it as an anniversary gift. See our full range of diamond painting kits for more famous art.
