Klimt finished his portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer in 1907, and it became known as the Golden Adele. Opulent gold and intricate patterns surround her calm, steady expression.

Look at the gold. In this Klimt diamond painting, all those patterned sections catch the light the way gold leaf does, and Adele's face sits right in the middle, quiet and composed.

Klimt, Ravenna and the Golden Phase

In 1903 Gustav Klimt visited Ravenna in Italy and saw its Byzantine mosaics, glittering walls of gold set with flat, stylized figures. The trip fed straight into his Golden Phase, and this portrait is its high point. Klimt was also a founder of the Vienna Secession, the artists who broke away from Vienna's conservative establishment in 1897.

He painted Adele twice; the second, more colorful portrait followed in 1912. In the first, look at how her body almost disappears into the pattern, while her face and hands stay soft and lifelike. That contrast between flat gold and real skin is the heart of the painting.

Who Was Adele Bloch-Bauer?

Adele Bloch-Bauer was the wife of Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a wealthy Viennese sugar industrialist who commissioned the portrait. She hosted a salon for artists and writers in Vienna and died in 1925. Klimt worked on the painting for several years, using real gold and silver leaf alongside oil paint.

Where Is the Golden Adele Today?

The portrait was seized by the Nazis after Austria's annexation in 1938 and later hung for decades in the Belvedere in Vienna. Adele's niece, Maria Altmann, fought a long legal battle to recover it, and in 2006 it was returned to the family.

That same year Ronald Lauder acquired it for the Neue Galerie in New York, the museum of German and Austrian art he cofounded, where it hangs today. The story was told in the 2015 film Woman in Gold.

Why the Golden Adele Works So Well as a Diamond Painting

The ornaments in her dress are eyes, spirals and rectangles, shapes that suit drills perfectly. The gold areas are made of several close shades, so sort your drills carefully before starting. Drill the face and hands first, then the dress in sections, and finish with the background.

Her face and hands are the only naturally painted parts of the picture. Placing them first gives you a calm center to build all that gold around. Expect the dress to take most of your hours. Find more art history designs among our famous paintings.
