The History of Sénanque Abbey

Sénanque Abbey sits in a quiet valley near Gordes, in the Luberon area of Provence. Cistercian monks founded it in 1148, and a small community of monks still lives and works there. Its plain stone church and cloister are classic Cistercian architecture, built with almost no decoration on purpose.

The lavender in front of the abbey is cultivated by the monks and usually blooms from late June into July.
