Henri-Edmond Cross Paint by Numbers: Pointillist Color

Henri-Edmond Cross (1856 to 1910) was a French Neo-Impressionist born Henri-Edmond Delacroix in Douai. He adopted "Cross", an English play on croix, to avoid confusion with Eugène Delacroix. In 1884 he helped found the Société des Artistes Indépendants, and in 1891 he settled on the Mediterranean coast of the Var, where he painted sunlit shores and gardens in small strokes of pure color. Our Henri-Edmond Cross paint by numbers kits bring those glowing scenes to your easel.

Henri-Edmond Cross and Neo-Impressionism

Pointillism

Like Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, Cross placed small touches of unmixed color side by side and let the eye blend them.

A broader stroke

In later years his dots grew into larger, mosaic-like blocks, with bolder color that pointed the way to Fauvism.

Influence on Matisse

Henri Matisse spent the summer of 1904 near Signac and Cross on the coast, and that time shaped his move toward pure color.

Tips for Painting Pointillist Paint by Numbers

Build the color slowly

Cross's scenes are made of many small sections in neighboring shades. Fill all the sections of one number across the canvas before moving to the next, and the shimmer appears on its own.

Step back often

Like the originals, these paintings come alive from a few feet away. Look at your canvas from across the room now and then to see the colors mix.

More Neo-Impressionist Color
