Monet the Gardener

Claude Monet loved gardens as much as painting, and the two went together for most of his life. Long before the water lily pond at Giverny made him famous, he was painting flowerbeds packed with color, setting his easel in front of blooms the way other artists set it before a model.

A Garden Wherever He Lived

Monet planted gardens at almost every house he rented, from Argenteuil in the 1870s to Vétheuil and finally Giverny, where he settled in 1883 and stayed until his death in 1926. At Giverny he turned an orchard in front of the house into a flower garden laid out in long beds, planted so something would always be in bloom.

He took gardening seriously, ordering seeds and plants, reading catalogs and employing several gardeners. He once said that he owed it to flowers that he became a painter.

How Impressionism Shows in a Flowerbed

Monet did not draw each petal. He placed quick dabs of pure color next to each other and let the eye blend them, so a bed of flowers becomes a shimmer of reds, pinks, whites and greens. That loose touch is what keeps the scene feeling alive and sunlit.

Look at the shadows under the plants. Rather than gray or brown, Monet used blues and purples, which keep the garden feeling bright even in its darkest parts.

Building the Garden in Flower Diamond Painting

Diamond painting suits this style, since both work with small points of color. The flowers sit in dense clusters, while the sky and paths are calmer and quicker. Fill the sky and paths first, then the leaves, and finish with the flowers so the brightest colors land on top.
