Rows of violet flowers run through lush green in The Artist's Garden at Giverny, Monet's view of the garden he spent decades planting.

This Monet garden diamond painting is a lovely gift for the gardener who always has dirt under their nails and a seed catalog on the nightstand. It sparkles nicely on a sunny wall, too.

Monet's Garden at Giverny

Claude Monet moved to Giverny, northwest of Paris, in 1883 and spent the next four decades shaping its garden, planting flower beds as carefully as he planned a canvas. The violet flowers running through this scene are irises, which he planted in long borders. The 1900 painting is part of the collection of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

The Clos Normand and the Water Garden

Monet's garden has two parts. The Clos Normand, in front of the house, is the flower garden seen here, laid out in straight beds and paths. Across the road lies the water garden, with the lily pond and Japanese style bridge he painted in his later years.

He rented the house at first and bought it in 1890. Both gardens are open to visitors today, replanted to look much as they did in his time.

What to Look For in This Monet Garden

There is no single focal point. Monet lets the rows of irises lead your eye back toward the house and trees, while patches of sun and shade fall across the beds. The flowers are painted in quick, broken touches, so they read as color and light rather than as separate blooms.

Building Monet's Flower Beds in Diamonds

The design is made of rows: purple flowers, green foliage and dappled light under the trees. That structure makes it easy to work in bands from the bottom up. The flowers have lots of small violet and pink variations, so in diamonds they shimmer the way sun on petals does.

It is a lovely gift for a gardener. For a Monet scene from the coast, see Customs House, Morning, 1882, or browse our textile inspired decorative diamond painting for another classic look.
