A Night Painting Without Black

Van Gogh set up his easel on the Place du Forum in Arles in September 1888 and painted this café after dark, on the spot. He wrote to his sister that he had made a night picture without any black, using blues, violets and greens for the sky instead. The painting now hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands.

The view looks along a narrow street from a corner of the square, with figures at the tables under the awning and passers-by on the cobbles beneath the stars.

Van Gogh's First Starry Sky

This café scene is the first canvas where he scattered stars across his sky, painting them as round flowers of light rather than tiny points. Within weeks he took the stars down to the river for Starry Night Over the Rhône, and the following June, in Saint-Rémy, he painted The Starry Night.

In Arles he was living in the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine and getting ready for Paul Gauguin, who arrived in October 1888. That autumn, before their stormy weeks together, was one of the most hopeful stretches of his life.

How Cafe Terrace at Night Sparkles in Diamonds

The lamp-lit awning glows yellow against the deep blue street, and that contrast is exactly what drills do well. Fill the big yellow terrace and the cobblestones first for quick progress, then work the starry sky, where small pale drills dot the blue like the stars themselves.

A tip for the cobblestones: they mix many small patches of warm and cool color, so drill them in small blocks and check the chart often. The pattern only reads as stones once the neighbors are in place.

A Cafe Terrace at Night Diamond Painting for Your Walls

The café itself still stands on the square, and visitors still come to see the view he painted. For more Van Gogh, try the swirling trees of Cypresses as a paint by numbers kit. Both look good in a hallway or a guest room.

Its yellow and blue also suit a kitchen, a dining room or a little coffee corner, and the finished canvas reads clearly from across a room.
