Who Was Oscar Bluemner?

Oscar Bluemner was born in Germany in 1867, trained as an architect and moved to the United States in 1892. He later turned to painting and became one of the early American modernists, showing work at the 1913 Armory Show in New York. He was famous for intense reds and called himself the Vermillion Hermit.

Many of his paintings show the small towns, canals and factories of New Jersey, places most painters of his day passed by.

An Architect's Way of Seeing

Bluemner often made many small studies of a single motif before painting it, testing shapes and color again and again. Roofs, walls and chimneys became pure geometry, and trees turned into rounded or pointed forms.

He was less interested in recording a place than in the feeling its colors and shapes gave him, which is why his towns look so charged and strange.

Form and Light in West New Jersey as a Diamond Painting

Bluemner's architect training shows in this view. Houses, trees and roads become hard edged blocks of color, arranged almost like a building plan. In diamond painting, those flat shapes turn into bold fields of sparkle. Fill the largest color blocks first, then the outlines and small connecting shapes.

Keep the edges between blocks straight and tidy. The crisp borders are what make this diamond painting read as modern art rather than a soft landscape.
