Edvard Munch Beyond The Scream

Edvard Munch (1863 to 1944) is best known for The Scream, painted in 1893, but he spent decades painting landscapes, trees and the Norwegian coast. In The Oak from 1906, the subject is a single tree with a strong trunk and broad crown, painted with the same expressive, emotional color as his more famous work.

He spent many summers at Åsgårdstrand, a small town on the Oslo fjord, and its shoreline and trees appear in some of his best known pictures. Munch rarely treated nature as plain scenery. He painted it as something alive that carries the mood of the people in front of it.

The Oak as a Symbol

Across Europe the oak has long stood for strength and endurance. In Norse tradition it was linked with Thor, the god of thunder. Munch's tree carries that steady, rooted feeling, a calm counterweight to the anxious mood of his best known painting.

The composition is simple: one tree, a strip of ground and open sky. The crown is built from heavy, rounded masses of green rather than single leaves, and line and color carry the feeling, which is why such a plain subject still feels charged.

The Oak Diamond Painting: Where to Start

Begin with the sky and the ground, then build the crown leaf cluster by leaf cluster before finishing the trunk. Pair it with The Scream, or for another symbolic nature piece, see Mother Nature.

Munch reworked many of his subjects as prints, and the bold, simplified shapes here have the same directness as his woodcuts. In diamonds, those big masses of color come through clearly.
