After he arrived at the asylum in Saint-Rémy in 1889, Vincent van Gogh became obsessed with the tall, dark cypress trees that dot the Provençal countryside. He wrote to his brother Theo that they were as beautiful in line and proportion as an Egyptian obelisk, and he was surprised no one had painted them the way he saw them.
One of his best-known cypress paintings from that June now hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Besides the Met's Cypresses, the trees star in Wheat Field with Cypresses, which Van Gogh painted in several versions that summer and autumn. One is also at the Met and another at the National Gallery in London, where you can compare how he reworked the same motif.
Theo kept the letters and paintings Vincent sent him, which is a large part of why we know so much about this series.
The trees are a mass of deep greens curling upward, and the sky around them is full of looping white and blue strokes. In diamonds, those curves become flowing bands of drills that catch the light as you move past the canvas. Do the sky first, then the dark trees, and the wheat and grasses at the bottom last.
The darkest greens have several close shades. Sort them before you start and keep each in its own tray, so the trees keep their depth instead of turning into one flat block.
