Van Gogh's idea of "industrial realism," now available as a Diamond Painting, which somehow still looks like the sky's having an existential crisis. Smoke curls upward like the factories themselves are sighing about capitalism. The ground blazes yellow as if it refuses to let the place be dreary. Even here, among soot and sweat, Vincent paints sunlight trying to unionize against despair.

Van Gogh Among the Factories

Most people picture Van Gogh with sunflowers and starry skies, but during his Paris years, from 1886 to 1888, he often walked out to the industrial suburbs on the edge of the city. There he painted factory yards, chimneys and smoke, giving even these places his bright, restless color. The Factory comes from that same fascination.

Painting the Suburbs With Signac

In the spring of 1887 Van Gogh often worked in Asnières, on the Seine just northwest of Paris, sometimes alongside Paul Signac. Under Signac's influence he tried shorter, separate strokes of pure color, a looser version of Pointillism that shows up in his views of factories and riverbanks from that year.

What to Look for in Van Gogh's Factory Scenes

Notice the contrast he sets up: tall chimneys and smoke against open ground and a big sky. He did not hide the factories or make them pretty. He painted them with the same color and energy he gave to gardens, as if modern life deserved a place in art too.

How to Approach The Factory as a Diamond Painting

Start with the blazing yellow ground, which is the largest area and sets the mood. Then fill the buildings in their reds and browns. The sky and smoke come last: their swirling blues and grays are full of movement, and in diamonds they catch the light beautifully.

It is a great pick for a Van Gogh fan who already owns the famous ones and wants something less expected, and it looks strong in a loft or an office. Explore more famous art among our diamond painting kits.
