Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria gave August Macke this view of Staudacher's house, painted with his expressive color and a feel for country light. This August Macke diamond painting keeps all of that rural charm.

It suits a kitchen, a breakfast nook or a guest room, any space where a cheerful house by the lake would make mornings better.

August Macke at Lake Tegernsee

August Macke and his wife Elisabeth spent about a year at Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria around 1909 and 1910. Soon after, he became close friends with Franz Marc and joined the circle of the Blue Rider. He was killed in the first months of World War I, at just 27.

The lake gave him a quiet place to paint every day, and the houses, gardens and shoreline around him became his subjects.

The Patron Behind Macke's Career

Elisabeth's uncle, the Berlin industrialist Bernhard Koehler, became one of Macke's most important supporters. He collected modern art and helped pay for the Blue Rider almanac published in 1912, which gave the group its public voice.

That support let Macke paint full time while he was still in his early twenties.

What to Look for in Staudacher's House

Notice how Macke simplifies the house into clear planes of wall and roof, then sets it among trees painted in quick, rounded strokes. The colors are fresh rather than realistic, a hint of the bright Expressionist palette he would soon be known for.

Diamond Painting Macke's Color

Macke liked clear, cheerful color and simple shapes, which suit diamond painting very well. Begin with the sky and water, then build the house and roof, and finish with the garden and trees. The bright walls look best set against an already completed landscape.

Pay attention to the roofline. A clean edge between roof and sky gives the whole house its crisp shape, and its sunny walls suit a kitchen or breakfast nook with morning light.

It is a lovely gift for someone who has visited the Bavarian lakes. Find more classics among our famous paintings, including works by his friend Marc.
