Who Was J. L. Ridgway?

J. L. Ridgway worked in the golden age of American ornithology, when illustrators were expected to draw birds accurately enough for scientists to identify each species. His mallard has that same careful precision: correct proportions, true markings and colors taken from life rather than imagination.

Plates like this were made for study, yet they are lovely on a wall, with clean outlines and no clutter. Before cameras were practical in the field, drawings like this were the main way to show what a species looked like.

The Mallard, America's Most Familiar Duck

Mallards live across most of North America and are the wild ancestor of nearly all domestic ducks. Drakes have a glossy green head and a narrow white collar, hens are mottled brown, and both have a blue patch on the wing.

Look for the drake's small curled black tail feathers. Mallards are dabbling ducks, tipping tail up to feed rather than diving, and it is the hen that gives the loud, classic quack.

Diamond Painting Feathers Neatly

Work the background first, then the body from the tail forward, finishing with the head and bill. Those crisp edges reward neat rows. The green head is where the shine sits, so place those drills carefully and the color will catch the light. Treat the thin white collar with care, since a single stray drill shows.

It suits a hunting lodge, a lake house or a birdwatcher's study, and makes a good gift for a duck hunter. Find more nature scenes among our diamond painting kits.
