The Story Behind The Repast of the Lion

Henri Rousseau painted this jungle scene around 1907. He never left France; his jungles came from the plants and animals at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and from pictures in books. Self-taught, he worked for years at the Paris toll office, which earned him the nickname Le Douanier. The original painting belongs to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

How the Avant-Garde Embraced Rousseau

Many critics laughed at his flat, careful style, but younger artists saw something new in it. In 1908 Pablo Picasso hosted a famous banquet in his honor at the Bateau-Lavoir studios in Montmartre, with poets and painters crowding the room.

His last great jungle, The Dream, was shown in 1910, the year he died, and now hangs at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
