Two crabs, nothing else. In 1889 Van Gogh made an oil painting of exactly that, and it's one of his more surprising subjects. This crab diamond painting gives you a side of Van Gogh few people expect.

Hang it in a seafood lover's kitchen or a beach cottage, or give it to the art fan who thinks they've seen all his work.

Why Did Van Gogh Paint Two Crabs?

Vincent van Gogh painted Two Crabs in Arles in early 1889. He may have been inspired by a Japanese print of crabs by Hokusai, since he collected woodblocks and admired their bold, simple subjects. One crab lies on its back, the other upright, on a green ground.

Red Against Green: What to Look For

Van Gogh chose the colors with care. Red and orange crabs on a green ground are complementary colors, which make each other look stronger side by side. His quick, directional strokes in the background keep the picture lively, even though the subject is as plain as a still life can be.

He also painted a single crab on its back, a smaller picture now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

Diamond Painting Tips for This Design

The design is simple and graphic, a good pick from our beginner friendly kits. The green background is one large area, and the crabs are reds and oranges with darker shell details. Fill the crabs first, then the background in rows.

When you're done, read our guide on how to seal your diamond painting. Prefer brushes? The same still life is our Two Crabs Paint by Numbers kit.

Where Is Two Crabs Today?

The original is in the National Gallery, London. It is a modest still life, and it shows how much energy Van Gogh could bring to a plain kitchen subject with nothing but color and brushwork.

His still lifes of food and simple objects are often overlooked next to his sunflowers and starry skies, which makes this one a good talking point on a kitchen wall.
