Franz Marc and His Dog Russi

Franz Marc, the German Expressionist who co-founded Der Blaue Reiter with Kandinsky, painted animals more than people. He believed they lived in a purer, more honest way. The white dog curled up here is usually identified as Russi, his own Siberian sheepdog. Marc was killed at Verdun in 1916, at 36.

The son of a Munich painter, Marc first studied theology before turning to art. Around 1910 he moved to the countryside south of Munich, where animals became his main subject, and his famous blue horses followed soon after. With Kandinsky he edited the Blue Rider Almanac of 1912.

Color With a Meaning

Marc gave colors symbolic roles. In a 1910 letter to August Macke he described blue as spiritual and calm, yellow as gentle and warm, and red as heavy and earthly. In this picture, cool snow and soft yellow light wrap around the sleeping dog, which explains its peaceful mood.

Marc wanted to paint the world as an animal might feel it, not as people see it. That is why his animals are so often calm and folded into the landscape rather than placed in front of it.

Is This Dog Diamond Painting Hard?

Not at all. The shapes are large and simplified, and the palette stays limited, so the work moves along at a calm, steady pace. Fill the snow first, then the dog, and add the soft yellow tones last for the warm glow over the white coat. It is a good first project for someone new to diamond painting.

For another animal in a snowy setting, try Red Fox Among the Peaks, or paint more of Marc's animals with The Foxes.
