Franz Marc painted The Blue Horse I in 1911, and he used color to express emotion rather than to copy nature. Hence the horse: bold, blue, and completely unbothered by it.

That blue is the heart of this Franz Marc diamond painting. Set against a colorful backdrop, it shows Marc's feel for color, form, and movement, and it sparkles nicely once finished.

Why Franz Marc Painted His Horse Blue

In a letter to August Macke, Marc explained that for him blue stood for the masculine and the spiritual. He painted The Blue Horse I in 1911, the year he and Wassily Kandinsky founded the Blue Rider group in Munich. The painting now belongs to the Lenbachhaus in Munich. Marc was killed at Verdun in 1916, aged 36.

Franz Marc and His Animals

Animals were Marc's great subject: horses, deer, foxes, cows and cats. He believed they lived in a purer, more natural state than people, and he tried to paint the world as an animal might feel it rather than as a person sees it. Hence his yellow cows, red deer and blue horses.

Horses appear again and again in his work. His large Tower of Blue Horses from 1913 has been missing since the end of World War II, and its fate is unknown.

The Blue Horse I Diamond Painting

The horse is built from smooth curves of deep and pale blue, which become large, satisfying areas of drills. The hills behind it break into patches of red, yellow and green. Do the horse first, then the landscape around it.

The horse's body moves from dark navy in the shadows to pale sky blue on the highlights. Following those bands in order, darkest to lightest, keeps its rounded shape.

Is The Blue Horse Good for Beginners?

Yes. The large, smooth areas of blue make it a friendly pick for newcomers, and you can find more in our diamond painting for beginners collection or search all Franz Marc diamond paintings.
