Franz Marc, a founder of the Blue Rider group, painted The Foxes in 1913, breaking the animals into sharp planes and angles like light through a prism. They stop being foxes and become pure movement. This Franz Marc diamond painting is a bold pick for modern art fans, and those crisp geometric facets look great once they sparkle.

Franz Marc and the Color of Animals

Franz Marc, born in Munich in 1880, painted animals more than people because he felt they lived closer to nature. He gave colors meaning of their own: blue for the spiritual, yellow for gentleness, red for the heavy, physical world. In 1911 he and Wassily Kandinsky founded the Blue Rider group. Marc was killed at Verdun in 1916.

What to Look for in The Foxes

At first glance the picture is a burst of red and orange shards. Look longer and the foxes emerge, their pointed heads and curled bodies folded into the angles. Marc wanted to show the world as an animal might feel it, so the forms and setting merge into one charged pattern.

The year 1913 was one of his most inventive, when he also painted The Tower of Blue Horses, a famous canvas that has been lost since World War II.

Why The Foxes Suits Diamond Painting

Marc built The Foxes from crisp planes of red, orange and yellow cut through by intersecting lines, an approach shaped by Cubism and Futurism. Those hard edged facets match the way diamond painting works, with each plane a clear block of drills.

Fill the larger background planes first, then the foxes, and save the sharp line work for last.
