Audubon and The Birds of America

John James Audubon spent years travelling the American frontier to paint every bird he could find, life size. The result, The Birds of America, was printed in England between 1827 and 1838 as 435 hand-colored plates on huge sheets.

How the Plates Were Made

Audubon took his watercolors to Britain to find printers. The London engraver Robert Havell Jr. produced most of the plates on copper, and each print was colored by hand. The pages were so big that the format is still called the double elephant folio. Audubon sold the book by subscription, a few plates at a time.

What to Look For in the Swan

Life size was easy for a warbler and hard for a swan. To fit such a large bird on the sheet, Audubon posed it with its long neck curved, which also gives the picture its graceful rhythm. Look at the fine feather lines on the wing and the sharp contrast of the dark bill against white plumage.

How the Swan Works as a Diamond Painting

White feathers are made of many subtle grays, creams and pale blues, and in diamonds those tones shimmer like real plumage. Fill the water and background first, then the body, and finish with the head, bill and eye. The black bill and dark eye are small but important, so place those last with care for a crisp finish.

It is a lovely gift for birders, lake house owners or newlyweds, since swans are a classic symbol of lifelong love. Prefer a brush? The same image comes as our Common American Swan Paint by Numbers kit.
