The Tiger in Japanese Art

Tigers did not live in Japan, yet they became a favorite subject of Japanese painters, who worked from imported pictures, skins and imagination. The results tend to be bold and a bit fantastical, like this one. A tiger climbs a moonlit cliff, stripes glowing against an indigo sky, with autumn leaves drifting past.

What the Tiger Stood For

In Chinese and Japanese tradition the tiger is a symbol of strength and courage, and it is often paired with the dragon, the tiger ruling the earth while the dragon rules the sky. Among the four guardian creatures of the directions, the White Tiger watches over the west and the season of autumn.

Katsushika Hokusai kept painting tigers into his last years. One of his final works, from 1849, the year he died, shows a tiger in the snow.

How to Place the Drills on This Tiger Diamond Painting

Start with the deep blue sky and the moon, which take up a lot of space and set the night mood. Then fill the cliff and leaves, and finish with the tiger. The amber and black of the stripes look sharpest when they go on last.

Tigers are all curves and stripes, so follow the direction of each stripe as you work. That keeps the body looking rounded and gives the climbing pose its sense of muscle.

A Strong Piece for a Den or Office

It suits a den or office, in autumn or all year. The moon and the warm stripes give a dark room a strong focal point. Find more animals and Asian-inspired art among our diamond painting kits.
