Kawase Hasui made this print as a nod to the ukiyo-e master Utagawa Hiroshige, and you can feel that respect in it. Snow settles over Zojoji Temple on a quiet evening, and everything is hushed.

As a Japanese diamond painting it makes a lovely winter piece, the kind you hang in December and somehow never take down. Try it in a hallway or reading corner where things stay calm.

Kawase Hasui and the Shin-Hanga Movement

Kawase Hasui (1883 to 1957) was a leading artist of shin-hanga, or new prints, a movement of the early twentieth century that revived traditional Japanese woodblock printing. Working with the publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō, he produced hundreds of landscapes of quiet temples, rain and snow. Late in life he was named a Living National Treasure.

How a Shin-Hanga Print Was Made

Like the older ukiyo-e prints, shin-hanga was a team effort. The artist made the design, a carver cut a separate wooden block for each color, and a printer pressed the colors one by one onto damp paper. The publisher guided the whole process. That system is why Hasui's prints have such clean, layered color.

Why Is Snow at Zojoji Temple So Famous?

Zōjō-ji is a large Buddhist temple in the Shiba district of Tokyo, long tied to the Tokugawa shoguns. Hasui shows its red gate under falling snow, with a lone figure under an umbrella, and that hush is what has made it one of his best-loved images.

The temple still stands today, close to Tokyo Tower, and the gate is a popular stop for visitors.

Snow over Zojoji Temple as a Diamond Painting

Notice the contrast of warm and cold. The red gate glows against a dark sky and white snow, and the small figure gives the scene its scale. Hasui loved weather, and the soft dots of falling snow are part of the design, not an afterthought.

In diamonds, place the dark sky and the red gate first, then the snow, so the whites stay clean. More prints await in our famous paintings.
