John James Audubon drew every bird in Birds of America at life size, which is why his American Flamingo bends so low: it had to fit the page. Its red form stands out against a soft coastal backdrop, with quieter flamingos behind.

This flamingo diamond painting makes a great gift for birders, beach-house owners, or anyone who loves Florida.

Audubon's American Flamingo

John James Audubon traveled America painting every bird he could find, then published them as The Birds of America between 1827 and 1838, 435 hand colored plates printed at life size. The flamingo was one of the biggest birds he drew, so he folded its neck down to fit the sheet.

Who Was John James Audubon?

Audubon was born in 1785 in Saint-Domingue, now Haiti, grew up in France and came to the United States as a young man. Unable to find an American printer for so large a project, he took it to Britain, where the engraver Robert Havell Jr. produced most of the plates in London.

The sheets, known as double elephant folio, stand more than three feet tall, which is why a life size flamingo was possible at all.

Why Are Flamingos Pink?

Flamingos get their color from what they eat. Pigments in the algae and tiny shrimp-like animals they feed on build up in their feathers, so a well fed bird turns deep pink or red. Audubon's crimson flamingo shows the strong color of birds from the Caribbean region.

Placing the Flamingo in Diamonds

The crimson body is the star, built from several reds and pinks with fine feather lines. The coastal background is soft and calm, with smaller flamingos in quieter tones. Fill the background first, then the long legs and neck, and finish with the body and head.

It looks right in a beach house, a Florida condo or a birder's study. Find more wildlife among our diamond painting kits.
