Henri Rousseau's Imaginary Jungles

Henri Rousseau worked for years at a Paris toll office, which earned him the nickname Le Douanier, the customs officer. He was self-taught and never traveled to the tropics. His jungles came from the botanical gardens and zoo of the Jardin des Plantes in Paris and from illustrated books, which is why his plants look so tidy.

From Outsider to Hero of the Avant Garde

Rousseau began showing his work at the Salon des Indépendants in the 1880s, and for years critics laughed at it. Younger artists saw something else: bold design, fearless color and complete sincerity. In 1908 Pablo Picasso threw a famous banquet in his honor at the Bateau Lavoir studios in Montmartre. Rousseau died in 1910.

His late jungles, made in his last years, are now his best known works.

What to Look For in Exotic Landscape

Rousseau built his jungles like stage scenery, layer upon layer of leaves, each one outlined clearly, with almost no blur or haze. There can be dozens of greens in a single picture. Look for flowers and fruit glowing like lamps among the foliage, and for the animals half hidden in the leaves.

Rousseau Diamond Painting: Finding the Creatures

Rousseau layered dozens of leaf shapes in many shades of green, so this kit is full of detail. Start at the top with the sky, then work the leaves from the back layer forward. The animals hiding among them are the reward, so save them for last.

It looks great in a room full of houseplants. Explore more famous paintings by Rousseau and other masters.
