The Story Behind Road Menders at Saint-Rémy

In December 1889, Van Gogh painted this street scene during his stay at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. Workers repair the pavement of a boulevard under huge plane trees, whose twisting trunks dominate the picture. He painted two versions, one now at the Cleveland Museum of Art and the other at the Phillips Collection in Washington.

The picture shows the town carrying on with ordinary life, a subject that had moved him since his early years in Holland, when he drew farm laborers, weavers and diggers at work. Here the workers are small, and the trees take over.

What to Look For in the Painting

The plane trees are the real subject. Their trunks are enormous and twisting, cut off at the top so they seem to push past the edge of the canvas. The yellow autumn leaves, painted in thick strokes, and the tiny figures below make the trees feel even larger.

Van Gogh liked to frame a scene through something close at hand, and here the trunks act like a screen you look through to the street beyond. The road and buildings sit behind them, smaller and paler.

Road Menders Diamond Painting: Trunks and Tones

The big plane tree trunks are the boldest shapes, with curving bands of color. The road and sky are calmer and broader. Fill those first, then build up the trunks, and finish with the small figures at work so they stand out against the bark.

Unlike his famous sunflowers, this is a quieter picture of daily work, which suits a study or office. More Van Gogh scenes and other classics wait among our famous paintings and diamond painting kits.
