Van Gogh painted his own bedroom in Arles in 1888, and he liked it enough to paint it more than once. Look at the slanted perspective, the carefully arranged furniture, the bold, contrasting colors: a private room seen with a very personal eye.

This van Gogh diamond painting suits beginners and experienced crafters, and a bedroom wall is its obvious home.

Why Did Van Gogh Paint His Bedroom Three Times?

The first version dates from October 1888, painted in the Yellow House in Arles while Van Gogh waited for Paul Gauguin to arrive. After water damaged that canvas, he made two more versions in 1889. Today they hang in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Van Gogh rented the Yellow House on Place Lamartine in May 1888 and moved in that September. He hoped it would become a home for a community of artists, starting with Gauguin.

Color Meant to Suggest Rest

In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh wrote that the colors should suggest rest or sleep. He used flat areas of pale violet walls, yellow furniture and a red blanket, with almost no shadows, a lesson he took from Japanese prints.

What to Look For in The Bedroom

Count the pairs: two chairs, two pillows, two doors. In the first version, the portraits above the bed show his friends Eugène Boch and Paul-Eugène Milliet. The odd, tipped perspective is partly real, since the back wall of the room did not meet the side walls at a right angle.

The Yellow House itself was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1944 and later pulled down, so these paintings are the best record of the room he lived in.

Bedroom in Arles Diamond Painting Tips

Flat color is ideal for diamonds, so the room comes together cleanly. Start with the floorboards and walls, then the bed and chairs, and finish with the small pictures on the wall. The violet walls and blue doors sit close in tone, so check your numbers where they meet.

Try Les Iris next, or Der Blaue Reiter (1914).
