Blue thistles and yellow fruit against a pale wall, and somehow none of it sits still. Van Gogh called this kind of picture a nature morte, a still life, but the color here is restless.

Tip: do the pale wall first, then the yellow fruit, and finish with the blue thistles so they pop. A Van Gogh diamond painting with big energy.

What Does Nature Morte Mean?

Nature morte is French for still life, literally dead nature. Van Gogh painted dozens of still lifes, especially in Paris and later in the south of France, using fruit, flowers and pottery to test how strong colors behave side by side. Blue against yellow was one of his favorite pairings.

Why Van Gogh Painted Still Lifes

Still lifes were his practice ground. When Van Gogh arrived in Paris in 1886, his palette was still dark and earthy, in the style of his Dutch peasant scenes. Flowers and fruit were cheap, patient models, and painting them day after day helped him learn the brighter color he saw in the work of the Impressionists.

His famous Sunflowers, painted in Arles, grew out of that habit.

What to Look For in a Van Gogh Still Life

He liked to set complementary colors against each other, blue beside orange or yellow, red beside green, so each one looks stronger. Look for that pairing between the thistles and the fruit. Notice too that the background is never flat: it is built from visible strokes, so even the wall seems to move.

A Van Gogh Diamond Painting Full of Texture

His thick brushstrokes turn into small shifts of shade in the chart, so the thistles and fruit sparkle with movement. Expect deep blues, golden tones and plenty of color changes in the flowers, which keeps every session interesting. Place the pale wall first, then the fruit, and finish with the blue thistles.

Van Gogh lovers will enjoy it most. Hang it in a kitchen or dining room, or near a real bowl of fruit. Browse more famous art in our diamond painting kits.
