Who Was Luis Egidio Meléndez?

Luis Egidio Meléndez was born in Naples in 1716 and worked in Madrid, where he never gained the court post he wanted and died poor in 1780.

His best known work is a series of still lifes painted for the future King Charles IV, meant to show the produce of Spain. Many of those canvases now hang in the Prado Museum in Madrid.

The Spanish Bodegón Tradition

In Spain a still life of food is called a bodegón, and the country has a strong tradition of them, from Juan Sánchez Cotán and Francisco de Zurbarán in the seventeenth century onward. These pictures are plain and quiet, with a few everyday things set on a ledge against a dark ground.

Meléndez took that tradition and made it intensely real, painting each vegetable as if it were a portrait.

What to Look For in the Still Life

Look at the surfaces. The tomatoes are smooth and tight, the aubergines shine almost black, and the onion skins are dry and papery. Light falls from one side, so every shape has a bright face and a shadowed side, and the dark background makes them stand forward.
