Who Was the Girl with a Pearl Earring?

Nobody knows. Johannes Vermeer painted her around 1665 in Delft, but the picture was never meant as a portrait of a specific person. It is a tronie, a Dutch study of a face, a costume or an expression. She wears a blue and yellow turban, colored with costly ultramarine made from ground lapis lazuli.

Only about 35 paintings are accepted as Vermeer's, and he spent his whole life in Delft, working slowly. This one hangs in the Mauritshuis in The Hague.

Where Is Girl with a Pearl Earring Today?

It has been in the Mauritshuis since the early twentieth century, left to the museum by a collector who had bought it at auction for a very small sum in 1881. At the time Vermeer was barely known. His reputation was revived only in the nineteenth century, and today the painting is often called the Mona Lisa of the North.

A 1999 novel by Tracy Chevalier imagined her story, and a 2003 film with Scarlett Johansson made her face known to millions more.

What to Look For in the Painting

Look at the earring first. It is painted with only a few strokes: a bright highlight at the top and a soft reflection of her white collar below. There is no hook connecting it to her ear. Then notice the parted lips, the glance over her shoulder and the plain dark background, which pushes her face toward you.

The light falls softly from the left, a choice Vermeer made in many of his pictures, and it catches her eye, lips and earring.

Vermeer's Light in a Diamond Painting

The background is a single, deep dark area, so it fills quickly and sets the mood. The face and turban hold the subtle shading, with many close skin tones. Place the background first, then the turban, and finish with the face and that single bright earring.

It suits a hallway gallery or a reading corner, where the dark ground and one bright face read well from across the room. Find more old masters among our diamond painting kits.
