Bulb Fields, also called Flowerbeds, dates from 1883, when Van Gogh was living in The Hague. It is one of his earliest garden paintings, a wide view of tulip fields in bloom.

Van Gogh Before the Swirls

In 1883 Vincent van Gogh was still teaching himself to paint in The Hague, where his cousin by marriage, the painter Anton Mauve, had given him early lessons. His palette then was mostly earthy browns and greens, so these tulip stripes stand out. Also known as Flower Beds in Holland, it belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.

Why Dutch Bulb Fields Bloom in Stripes

In Holland, tulips and hyacinths are grown for their bulbs rather than their flowers. Growers plant each variety in its own long bed, so in spring the fields turn into bands of red, yellow and white. The blooms are often cut off soon after opening so the plant's strength goes back into the bulb.

Van Gogh set those bright beds under a wide Dutch sky, and the flat land lets the stripes run almost to the horizon.

Why the Tulip Rows Work So Well as a Diamond Painting

The flat Dutch fields split into long bands of color, and each band becomes its own clear section of drills. Work one row at a time from the horizon toward the front, and the stripes stay tidy. Once finished, the color bands pick up a soft shimmer that shifts as you walk past.

Use a ruler or the edge of a card to keep long rows straight, especially near the horizon, where the bands are narrowest.
