Van Gogh's Cypresses at Saint-Rémy

Van Gogh painted Wheat Field with Cypresses in the summer of 1889, while staying at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. He made three versions. One hangs at the National Gallery in London and another at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Cypresses fascinated him. In a letter to his brother Theo, he compared their lines and proportions to an Egyptian obelisk.

What to Look for in the Painting

The first version was painted outdoors, in front of the field, and the later ones were repeats made in his studio. In each, the picture stacks into bands: golden wheat at the bottom, green olive trees and hills in the middle, and a sky full of white, curling clouds.

The cypress on the right is the darkest note in the whole scene. It holds the swirling sky and the restless wheat in place.

Why Wheat Mattered to Van Gogh

Wheat appears all through his work, from sowers to reapers to harvest scenes. He saw it as a picture of the cycle of life, with planting, growth and harvest repeating each year, and he returned to the fields around the asylum again and again that summer.
