Van Gogh painted olive trees again and again while he lived in Saint-Rémy in 1889. This one has swirling skies and textured foliage, full of bold color and passionate brushwork.

Placing each stone in this Van Gogh diamond painting feels energetic rather than sleepy, as if the trees are still moving. It suits anyone who loves the intensity of his later work.

Why Van Gogh Kept Painting Olive Trees

During his year at Saint-Rémy, from 1889 to 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted the olive groves around the asylum around fifteen times. He saw the twisted, silvery trees as a living symbol of the south and of hard, patient work. He painted them in every light, morning, noon and evening, changing the colors of soil and sky each time.

Van Gogh at Saint-Rémy

In May 1889, after a series of breakdowns in Arles, Van Gogh admitted himself to the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, a former monastery just outside Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. When he was well enough he was allowed to paint in the gardens and then in the fields and groves nearby, among wheat fields, cypresses and the low Alpilles hills.

It was one of the most productive years of his life. The Starry Night, the cypress paintings and the olive groves all come from this time.

What to Look for in the Olive Groves

Olive trees are hard to paint well. Their leaves are green on top and silver underneath, so the color flickers when the wind moves through them. Van Gogh caught that with short strokes of gray green, blue and touches of white. The trunks twist like living figures, and the ground beneath is often striped with ochre, rose or violet shadows.

Placing Van Gogh's Brushwork in a Diamond Painting

The sky and ground are built from short, curved strokes, and the diamonds follow them in bands of blue, green and ochre. Work the sky first, then the ground, and finish with the trunks and leaves so their dark shapes sit cleanly on top.

Try to follow the direction of his strokes as you place each row, rather than working in strict straight lines. The finished surface will keep more of the movement he put into the paint. Find more of his landscapes among our diamond painting kits.
