Alphonse Mucha designed Zodiac in 1896 as an in-house calendar, then watched it become one of his most famous images.

Look at the ring around her head, where the twelve signs of the zodiac circle a graceful female figure. This Art Nouveau paint by numbers is a great choice for astrology fans and anyone who loves vintage poster design. It looks wonderful in a bedroom or dressing area.

This was a fun one! Have a good magnifying glass.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896)

I loved this painting. It’s my favorite. It took a long time to complete but I loved working on it. I wish there were more similar designs to choose from. I’d love more new age and boho designs.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Fantastic product! It’s become my meditation. When I paint the rest of the world fades away. Quality paints and prints. I find the selection of prints offered to be a bit more sophisticated compared to the other companies.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Zodiac is an amazing painting and experience. My son had it beautifully framed and it is hanging in his home. Excellent quality!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Great delay for shipping. Great materials, plenty of paint. For a better effect, most colors will need a second and some colors, a third layer. Very detailed, lots of very small areas to cover, especially the Zodiac. I have more items in my cart as I write this. Very satisfied. Beautiful rendering (more colorful) of Mucha's art. I love love love them!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

I’m a big Mucha and Art Nouveau fan. It was such a thrill to paint one of his pieces. I was stunned by how well it came out and I enjoyed the complexity and the many hours of fun I experienced working on this piece. Now I’m going to order another one!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Beautiful but for à first one it is a big défi.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Fantastic A. Mucha piece! The Canvas arrived quickly and enjoyed every bit of the painting process. I framed the final piece and hang it in the living room. I recommend it.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

The amount of details on this is wild! I do agree with some other review that some numbers could be bigger, but I always check the accompanying key just in case. I did do some blending on the skin and hair to make it look smoother but it would look fine without. This will keep me busy for weeks and I can't wait to choose my next paint by numbers!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

This was actually the first time I've ever purchased something on Etsy..and let's just say.Impressive!. My canvas came rolled..not a crease in sight, compared to other manufacturers that fold in fours and you have to spend an hour steaming it before you can even begin to paint. Paints were actually sealed in this nice case, along with a very fine detailed canvas. Shipping was fast. Can't wait to order more!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Far better than any other kits I have tried. Paints are rich in colour, brushes are good and canvas is good quality. Also VERY detailed and fine. I have nowhere near finished - this will keep me going for months. I also bought several gifts for friends. I find this is a great downtime relaxation activity, and I put on some chill music and an essential oils diffuser and enjoy the therapy of it. Customer service was extremely helpful and responsive. A previous kit I bought was missing a colour, which I only realised after a year, and they sent me a replacement for free (from the new warehouse they upgraded to, where the products are improved). Very impressed. Highly recommend on all fronts - thanks very much!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Love the PbN from this company. The USA stock arrives really quickly and everything is really good quality. The paint is a little thick but that is fine as I use flow-aid anyway and never have to worry about running out before the piece is finished.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Love it, although upon finishing, I noticed it doesn’t have nearly all the details as it does in the picture that that sold it to me. I’m going to go in on my own and fill in those details. But it still looks great and was a really fun one to work on!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

I loved this kit. The colors are spot on and while at first I didn’t it working, the image is beautiful! My only complaint is in the tiny areas the numbers are squished or on top of each other.

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Picked 2 Mucha paintings to hang next to one of my watercolors. I love the art nouveau style and colors used. This was the first one I painted. Very challenging, with small spaces and color transitions. Loved the finished product, but again I had to add layers to cover up the dark numbers. Would still highly recommend this!

Customer photo review of Zodiac (1896) - Paint by Numbers

Love the vibrant colors

I loved doing this painting. Mucha is my favorite artist. I can't wait to work on more paint kits.

Great

Beautifully made. I am excited to start it. Thank you

Excellent quality. They turn out looking very much like real paintings.

This is very elaborate and detailed. I was worried it would not look like the inspiration picture but it definitely does.

I’ve purchased paint-by-number kits from many companies and CanvasByNumbers is by far the BEST! The canvases come rolled, DIY frames are very nice quality, the paints are well pigmented and apply extremely well, the canvas designs are intricate which results in beautifully detailed final results, and the additional paper copies of the painting’s number key and color image are wonderfully helpful bonuses!

love all the kits by this company

So incredibly detailed. Going to take awhile to complete.

Fast shipping and great set!!!

Came in pretty quickly. Gave it as a Christmas gift for a n Alphonse Mucha fan, she loved it! Looks pretty simple and easy to follow but have not used it myself. Seller was quick to answer any questions too.

I love Mucha And found it very hard to find his pictures as paint by numbers. I also like painting free-form also – and found some of the colour cuts a little unusual but overall a great high quality canvas.

[USA Stock] Savonnerie de Bagnolet - Alphonse Mucha

The quality of this paint by number kit is great, but i am giving it 4 stars because one of the colors, there wasn't enough to color all the areas, and i had to use an alternate color. And I felt much of the details were lost compared to the original image we ordered from. I am a seasoned painter, so added more details and used metallic copper to liven up tye painting at the end. This was a challenging painting and looking forward to the other Art Noveau painting I got.

This painting, when it is done, will be magnificent. Colors are amazing. I just can’t get it done as fast as I would like to.

Absolutely beautiful and the whole kit was top class.A real joy to work.

Thanks so much! Great product -- slow shipping :/

This is my first purchase from the website, I was very happy to find a top quality product. The colors are great, with a very smooth texture and good coverage. The canvas is also great, the print is clear and the colors spread well on it without being absorbed. This definitely a different standard from the cheaper sets you get online (which is what I’ve worked with until now) Very pleased!

Got my order fast and arrived in excellent condition can't wait to start painting!

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all! Our kits are designed for both beginners and experienced artists. The numbered guide makes it easy to follow along, and many users find the process meditative and relaxing. Simply match the numbers on the canvas with the numbers on the paint and start creating!

Some colors, mostly yellows, whites, light pinks and pale blues, are semi-transparent, so the printed numbers and lines can show through after one coat. That is normal. Let the first coat dry, then add a second one. Painting the light areas before the dark ones next to them also helps, and avoid adding water, which makes the paint thinner.

If the paint is still wet, wipe it off with a damp cotton swab. If it has dried, simply paint over it with the right color once it is completely dry. Covering a dark color with a light one may need two or three thin coats. Acrylic paint is very forgiving, so a small slip is easy to hide.

Close each pot tightly after use, since acrylic paint dries quickly when left open. If a color has become thick, add one or two drops of water and stir. If it has dried out completely, contact us with the color number: within 60 days of delivery we send replacement paints for free.

It depends on the kit level, the size and your own pace. As a guide, Beginner kits take about a week of relaxed painting, Intermediate kits a little more than a week, and Advanced kits two weeks or more. A larger size or Premium detail adds time. It's not a race, so enjoy the process.

A pre-stretched kit is ready to hang once the paint is dry, with a hanging kit included. A rolled canvas can go on our DIY frame or to a local framer. Our canvases are made in metric sizes (40x50 cm is slightly smaller than 16x20"), so measure the painted area before buying a frame.

Most orders ship from our California or Texas locations and arrive in 3 to 7 business days in the US. Canvas board kits and orders outside the US take 7 to 14 business days. The Shipping Information tab on this page shows the estimate for this item.

We will send tracking information to the e-mail address associated with your order once the item has shipped.

At Canvas by Numbers, we're proud of our exceptional customer service. Understanding the intricacies of art creation, we offer a 60-day guarantee where we'll send extra paints for free should you run out of any color.

Yes, safety is a top priority for us. The paints used in our kits are water-based, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. Likewise, the materials in our diamond painting kits are non-hazardous. Always use the kits as directed and keep them out of reach of small children.

How Mucha's Zodiac Calendar Became an Icon

Alphonse Mucha, born in Moravia in 1860, became the star of Paris almost overnight with his 1894 poster for Sarah Bernhardt. Two years later he designed Zodiac for his printer, Champenois, and the image was so popular that the art magazine La Plume also issued it as its own calendar.

It shows Mucha at his most typical: a calm profile, flowing hair, jewels and a perfect circle behind her head.

What to Look for in Zodiac

The ring of twelve signs works like a halo, borrowed from the religious icons and Byzantine mosaics Mucha admired. Around it, the jewelry, headdress and border are packed with ornament, while the face stays simple and smooth.

That balance between busy decoration and a quiet face became so recognizable in Paris that people simply called it the Mucha style, a look soon copied on posters, packaging and jewelry across Europe.

Zodiac Paint by Numbers: The Ring and the Hair

This is an intermediate kit. Start with the large background and the gown, then paint the zodiac ring, where careful work on each small sign pays off. Leave the hair and the decorative border for last, since their long curves look best painted in smooth, single strokes.

A small round brush and a steady hand on the signs make the whole ring look crisp.

Mucha After Paris

Mucha later returned home and spent years on The Slav Epic, twenty huge canvases on Slavic history. After 1918 he also designed the first stamps and banknotes of the new Czechoslovakia.
