Van Gogh spent the last months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, painting the village around him. Houses in Auvers is one of those scenes, a quiet, colorful look at an ordinary French village.

As a Van Gogh diamond painting, it suits a slow weekend project and a fan of his later work. Give it to the friend who has his sunflowers on a mug.

Houses at Auvers, May 1890

In May 1890, soon after moving to Auvers-sur-Oise, a village on the river Oise north of Paris, Van Gogh painted this view. He looked over the scene from a slightly raised viewpoint, taking in a patchwork of tiled and thatched roofs, garden walls and trees. The original belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Van Gogh's Last Weeks in Auvers

He came to Auvers to be near Dr. Paul Gachet, a physician and amateur painter who had agreed to keep an eye on him. In about seventy days he painted roughly seventy canvases, among them The Church at Auvers and Wheatfield with Crows. He died there at the end of July 1890, at 37.

The village scenes from that summer are full of thatch, gardens and winding lanes, and in his letters he wrote warmly about the beauty of the countryside around him. He also painted Gachet himself, in a portrait full of blue.

Turning Van Gogh's Brushwork into a Diamond Painting

His short, directional strokes break naturally into small patches of color, and diamonds pick that up well. The roofs are warm reds and oranges, the walls pale, the sky and greenery cooler. Drill the roofs first so the composition locks in, then fill the sky and gardens around them.

Prefer painting? Our Van Gogh paint by numbers collection has this scene and many more. Either version suits a hallway, a study or anywhere you want a calm village view.
