Odilon Redon, From Black to Color

For the first decades of his career, the French Symbolist Odilon Redon worked almost entirely in black, making charcoal drawings and lithographs he called his "noirs," full of dreamlike creatures. Around the 1890s he turned to color, and flowers became one of his favorite subjects.

This bouquet in an Etruscan style vase, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, comes from that later, glowing period.

Redon and the Symbolists

The Symbolists wanted art to suggest moods and dreams rather than describe the visible world. Redon was close to the poet Stéphane Mallarmé, and the novelist Joris-Karl Huysmans praised his strange drawings in his 1884 novel À rebours. Younger painters, including the Nabis, admired him deeply.

His flowers carry that dreamy spirit into color.

What to Look for in the Bouquet

The vase sits solid and clear at the bottom, with its ancient style shape. Above it, the flowers seem to drift, their edges dissolving into the background. Redon often worked in pastel as well as oil, and his colors have a soft, powdery glow, with blues, pinks and oranges sitting side by side.

The flowers feel half real and half imagined, which is exactly what he wanted.

Diamond Painting Redon's Soft Petals

Redon blurred the edges of his flowers so they seem to float in the air. In drills, that softness becomes small clusters of closely related shades. Begin with the vase, which has the clearest shapes, then move up through the bouquet, finishing with the background.
