Who Was John Henry Dearle?

John Henry Dearle joined Morris and Co. in 1878 as a young shop assistant and learned weaving under William Morris himself. He went on to design many of the firm's best known wallpapers and fabrics, and after Morris died in 1896 he became its art director.

In 1881 the firm moved its workshops to Merton Abbey, beside the River Wandle south of London, where dyeing, weaving and printing happened under one roof. Dearle trained there as a weaver and later designed many of the firm's large woven wall hangings himself.

His designs are often mistaken for Morris's own, since he worked so closely in the founder's style. Today historians give him much more credit for the firm's later output.

Birds in Arts and Crafts Design

Birds were a favorite subject at the firm. Morris drew thrushes raiding a fruit garden in The Strawberry Thief, and Dearle's pheasant follows that tradition, with flat, decorative plumage instead of the soft realism of a wildlife painting.

A cock pheasant is the male bird, with a long barred tail and a red patch around the eye, details that suit a pattern maker well. Cock Pheasant, from 1916, shows his gift for turning birds and plants into balanced, repeating forms.

Diamond Painting a Pattern Designer's Pheasant

The bird's feathers give you rich, patterned areas where each color change is clearly defined, while the background fills large blocks quickly. Many people start with the background to build momentum, then save the pheasant's head and tail for last, when you are in a steady rhythm.

The finished piece suits a country kitchen, a hallway or a study with wood furniture.

Fans of the Arts and Crafts movement will find more classic designs among our diamond painting kits.
