Who Was Ștefan Luchian?

Ștefan Luchian was born in 1868 and studied in Bucharest, Munich and Paris before returning to Romania, where he helped bring Impressionist light and freer brushwork into Romanian painting. He painted landscapes and portraits too, but his flowers are what most people remember.

From around 1900 a serious illness, now thought to be multiple sclerosis, slowly took away his ability to move. He kept painting for as long as he could and died in 1916.

Chrysanthemums bloom late in the year, and Luchian used their rusts and golds for some of his warmest pictures. Anemones were another flower he painted again and again.

Chrysanthemums and Scrubs, a Late Luchian Still Life

Luchian painted chrysanthemums many times near the end of his life, when flowers brought into his Bucharest home were his main window on nature. Here the blooms crowd together in loose, quick strokes, mixing warm autumn yellows and rusts with darker greenery. Nothing is fussy. The energy is all in the brushwork.

Look for the way he lets single strokes stand for whole petals. That shorthand gives the bouquet its movement.

Up close, his whites are rarely pure. Creams, pale pinks and gray greens sit next to one another and give the blooms their soft, painterly glow.

How Painterly Texture Turns Into a Diamond Painting
