Morris and the Arts and Crafts Garden

William Morris believed everyday objects should be made well and made beautiful. He once advised, "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." His wallpapers and fabrics brought English garden flowers indoors, drawn with care but arranged in flowing, repeating patterns. Daffodil is one of his brightest.

Morris began as a poet and a student of medieval art. When he set up his first home, Red House, south east of London, he and his friends decorated it themselves, and in 1861 that work grew into a firm later known as Morris & Co., selling furniture, glass, tiles, fabrics and wallpapers.

What to Look For in the Pattern

Morris drew from real plants and studied how they grow, then set them into a flowing repeat, with stems curving upward so the eye keeps moving. The daffodils keep their trumpet shape and spring color, but the arrangement is pure design. Look for the point where the pattern starts over, and you will see how carefully it was planned.

Is This Daffodil Diamond Painting Hard?

It works for beginners and seasoned crafters. The pattern repeats, so you will recognize shapes as you go, and the yellows and greens are easy to tell apart. The stems and leaves curve through the design and link the flower heads together.

A good order is background first, then leaves and stems, with the daffodils last so the yellows stay clean and bright.

A Springtime Piece for the Home

It suits a hallway, a breakfast nook or a guest room with white linens, and it is a nice Easter gift for a gardener. Prefer a brush? The same design is available as our Daffodil Paint by Numbers kit.
