William Morris and the Chrysanthemum Pattern

Morris was a leader of the Arts and Crafts movement in Victorian England, and his firm, Morris and Co., made wallpapers, textiles and furniture by hand at a time when factories were taking over. Chrysanthemum was one of his wallpaper designs, built so the flowers and leaves repeat across a whole wall without any visible seam.

Who Was William Morris?

William Morris (1834 to 1896) was a designer, poet, writer and craftsman who believed everyday objects should be made well and made beautifully. His best-known advice still gets quoted: "Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."

His wallpapers were printed by hand from carved wooden blocks, one block for each color. Late in life he also founded the Kelmscott Press to make finely printed books.

Why This Pattern Works as a Diamond Painting
