The pipe and a bit of crumpled paper on an empty seat say more than a portrait could. Van Gogh painted his own chair in Arles in 1888, plain and yellow, and it feels like he just stepped out of the room.

This Van Gogh diamond painting is a quiet, honest piece for a study, a writer's desk or a reading corner.

Why Did Van Gogh Paint an Empty Chair?

He painted it in Arles in late 1888 as a pair with Gauguin's Chair, a grander armchair shown at night with a candle. His own simple rush-seated chair sits in daylight with his pipe and tobacco. Many read the two as portraits of the friends without the friends. Van Gogh's Chair now hangs in the National Gallery, London.

The idea of an empty chair standing in for a person may go back to an engraving he admired years earlier, Luke Fildes' picture of Charles Dickens's empty chair, made just after the writer died in 1870. Van Gogh finished his own pair in the weeks before his breakdown that December, as the friendship with Gauguin fell apart.

What to Look For in the Chair

Everything is plain: a simple wooden chair, a rush seat, red tiles and a pale wall. The yellow chair stands out against cooler blues and greens, and the tiles tilt upward so you seem to look down on the scene. Compare it with the night lighting and rich color of Gauguin's Chair, now in the Van Gogh Museum.

Van Gogh's Chair Diamond Painting: Tiles and Straw

The floor tiles are broad, repeating shapes and fill quickly. The chair itself has the most color changes, especially the woven seat, so leave it for the second half. Finish with the pipe and the box of onions in the corner, where he signed his name.
