Van Gogh's Year at Saint-Rémy

Van Gogh entered the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1889, and he stayed for a year. On good days he painted the walled garden, the pines and the hospital buildings, producing around 150 paintings there. Starry Night and Irises come from the same stay, and so does this quiet view of a stone bench under the trees.

Why Van Gogh Painted the Asylum Garden

In his first weeks at the asylum, Van Gogh was not allowed to leave the grounds, so the garden became his whole world. He painted its ivy, its tree trunks and its overgrown paths with great care. Later, when he could walk outside the walls, he turned to wheat fields, olive groves and cypresses.

The garden pictures show how he found subjects worth painting in the simplest corners.

A Garden Seen Up Close

Unlike his sweeping landscapes, this scene is small and near: a bench, the path, tree trunks and grass. Short, curving brushstrokes cover the ground and foliage, which gives even a plain garden corner a sense of movement.
