This kit is centered around Morning at Hot Spring Resort in Arayu, a woodblock print created by Kawase Hasui. The woodblock print was made in the early twentieth century and presents a tranquil scene from inside a traditional ryokan (inn) looking out at Mt. Zao. The shoji screen framing the elements, the warm light on the mountain across, and the teapot in the foreground are all aspects of Hasui's ability to take an everyday object and render something quietly powerful.
The best part of this kit is that it's not just painting a mountain, but being in a tranquil room and having a mountain view. The tranquil tea scene, the simplistic architectural lines, and the gentle morning light reflecting on the water all contribute to a painting experience that is slow and meditative. Ideal for a slow morning and soothing afternoon.
Kawase Hasui was known for his prints being part of the shin-hanga ("new prints") movement in Japan, which melded traditional printing techniques with modern real life and emotion. Therefore, this kit embodies that balance, merging the warmth of domestic interiors with rural settings all across Japan. Ideal for anyone who loves a sense of place with a sense of feeling.
