Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all! Our kits are designed for both beginners and experienced artists. The numbered guide makes it easy to follow along, and many users find the process meditative and relaxing. Simply match the numbers on the canvas with the numbers on the paint and start creating!

Some colors, mostly yellows, whites, light pinks and pale blues, are semi-transparent, so the printed numbers and lines can show through after one coat. That is normal. Let the first coat dry, then add a second one. Painting the light areas before the dark ones next to them also helps, and avoid adding water, which makes the paint thinner.

If the paint is still wet, wipe it off with a damp cotton swab. If it has dried, simply paint over it with the right color once it is completely dry. Covering a dark color with a light one may need two or three thin coats. Acrylic paint is very forgiving, so a small slip is easy to hide.

Close each pot tightly after use, since acrylic paint dries quickly when left open. If a color has become thick, add one or two drops of water and stir. If it has dried out completely, contact us with the color number: within 60 days of delivery we send replacement paints for free.

It depends on the kit level, the size and your own pace. As a guide, Beginner kits take about a week of relaxed painting, Intermediate kits a little more than a week, and Advanced kits two weeks or more. A larger size or Premium detail adds time. It's not a race, so enjoy the process.

A pre-stretched kit is ready to hang once the paint is dry, with a hanging kit included. A rolled canvas can go on our DIY frame or to a local framer. Our canvases are made in metric sizes (40x50 cm is slightly smaller than 16x20"), so measure the painted area before buying a frame.

Most orders ship from our California or Texas locations and arrive in 3 to 7 business days in the US. Canvas board kits and orders outside the US take 7 to 14 business days. The Shipping Information tab on this page shows the estimate for this item.

We will send tracking information to the e-mail address associated with your order once the item has shipped.

How Old Is The Great Wave off Kanagawa?

Katsushika Hokusai made the print around 1831, when he was already in his seventies. It opened his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, a woodblock set that was hugely popular in Edo period Japan. Thousands of impressions were printed, and museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum hold copies today.

Part of its punch came from Prussian blue, a newly imported pigment that gave the sea its deep, lasting color.

What to Look For in The Great Wave

Start with the boats. Three long fishing boats, their rowers bent low over the oars, are caught beneath the wave. Then find Mount Fuji, tiny in the distance, framed inside the curve of the water. Hokusai makes the sacred mountain look like one more wave, the still point of a violent scene.

The foam breaks into fingers that seem to grab at the boats, and the spray falls like snow toward Fuji. The palette is small, built mostly on blues and soft neutrals, which is why the design reads so clearly even from across a room.

How The Great Wave Shaped Western Art

When Japanese prints reached Europe in the later 1800s, artists fell for them. Vincent van Gogh wrote admiringly about Hokusai's wave in a letter to his brother Theo, and Claude Monet collected Japanese prints for his house at Giverny. The fashion for Japanese design became known as Japonisme.

The composer Claude Debussy chose the wave for the cover of his orchestral work La Mer in 1905. Today it is one of the most recognized artworks in the world.

Tips for The Great Wave Paint by Numbers

The wave is the hard part and the best part. Its claw shaped foam is made of many small white and pale blue sections, so give those your full attention with a fine brush. The sky and the little cone of Mount Fuji are broad and calm, a good place to start.

Work from the sky, then the boats, then the wave itself. Once framed, it brings a clean, graphic look to an office or living room. See more classics in our famous paintings collection, or more of his prints in our Katsushika Hokusai collection.
